About E. Randy Beck Thurman

I was born in Indiana but have lived in Washington, DC for most of my adult life. My first experience with a camera was when I was 10 years old. My parents gave me a camera so I could record my first trip from Indianapolis to New York City. It was a wonderful experience for me, and none of those pictures will be seen in this photo gallery. But, from that time forward, I have had an abiding interest in being the eye behind the lens.

For many years, I shot black and white only, focusing on faces and textures. Some of my favorite photos come from the time I spent in Malaysia and Japan and many can be seen in the photo gallery. After moving to color for the nature photography which now dominates my portfolio, I am slowly returning to my black and white roots.

Living in Washington, DC has afforded me the privilege of studying with gifted teachers at both the Corcoran School of Art and at the Smithsonian Institution. Their instruction has brought me into the 21st century digital dark room. All the work I am processing now is done by way of digital technology.

When I am not wearing my "other hat" as a psychotherapist, my camera is with me in hopes of catching a fleeting photographic opportunity. To be able to capture a special moment through photography and share that moment through print is a profoundly satisfying experience for me and one for which I am very grateful.
